First blog post and a teen boy’s room makeover!
This was my middle son’s room just a few short months ago…..he’s 14 now! When I noticed his legs hanging off the end of the bed, I decided he needed a new mattress. ( I know what you’re thinking….what Mom could possibly NOT notice her child’s almost 6′ frame hanging off of a twin mattress? ) So, we started measuring his room, which is small and North facing. (10′ x 10′)
My son wanted more neutral walls, so I needed to paint the walls, and decide what fabrics to use. We had to choose a full mattress for this room size, or there would have been no room for his desk, chair, dresser, etc. An IKEA loft bed probably would’ve worked great, but my boys are really tired of bunk beds at their ages. Not to mention…who was gonna climb up that loft bed daily to make it up? Not my son, not me…… I found this map pillow at Ross, and that was kinda my inspiration. I also found the brown pillow at the top at Ross and loved the texture and it’s rectangular bolster shape. Blue/white lattice and cream/brown stripe linen blend material both were found at Hobby Lobby. I had some burlap in natural that looked really good with the other materials, but I didn’t use it.
I made a simple bedskirt out of the cream/brown linen blend material that I lined. I can sew basic things, but I chose to use my ‘old faithful’ standby: Stitch Witchery, to hem and to secure the material and lining together. I pleated it at the corners, and used my trusty staple gun to attach it to the box springs.( Note: I have since added upholstery tacks to the bedskirt edge on the boxsprings as it was a little heavy material with the lining, and the staples kept coming out.)
I was looking for an old compass or navigational device to add to my son’s wall, but I found this old gauge at an antique show. I also found a metal pan, and we flipped it and mounted it with Liquid Nails and screws for an industrial look. My son really liked it; I wasn’t sure, but was thrilled he did!
Made an easy envelope style pillow, and added a large button……..
I went in Home Goods one day, not expecting to find anything for a teen boy’s bedroom, but I was proven wrong! They had LOTS and LOTS of great decor items the day I went… ( guess it was meant to be?!) I saw this basket and instantly could see it above his headboard with masculine looking items….a starfish from our favorite beach location, faux Spanish moss with some succulents, and a turtle shell I picked up at an antique show.
I wanted a place for his guitar off the floor, so this guitar mount from Amazon looked pretty nice……..
We had a large empty wall and thought a navigational map from our favorite beach spot would be cool for him, and he has fished in some of those waters himself. I wanted his room to be simple, uncluttered, but have special items that had meaning to him.
At Home Goods the same day I found the chicken wire basket, I also found this amazing mirror. Isn’t it just cool?! Doesn’t it just SCREAM teen boy and/or masculine with the heavy rope and the rusty metal? I was beyond thrilled! ( I know you can relate to finding that special item!!) I also found the hour glass on the dresser and added some other things we already had…..
The curtains are from his previous room, but they started as dropcloth 84″ panels that I lengthened and then added ribbon trim to. I didn’t line them, but I still may do so. Also, I would like to add bamboo roman shades to replace his white wooden blinds……the white seems kind of stark with the soothing tans, blues, browns, and creams…..I think I need to paint his door, too. What color do you think? Regarding lighting, my son thinks he wants a ceiling fan, but I would love to find some type of interesting industrial/vintage light that gave the room that final touch…..
So….here is my 14 year old son’s room now…..his legs fit nicely on the bed now, and the dogs think we got THEM a new bed! The paint color is “Crisp Khaki” by Duron, but in a Behr flat paint with primer. The bedding all came from Bed,Bath, & Beyond.
What do you think? Is this a room a teen boy can enjoy and that will last his teen years? If you have teenagers, what things were important to them when you redecorated their rooms? I’d love to hear!
Thanks for visiting…..y’all come back!! 🙂
