Today, I’m sharing a design board I made for Chairish, showing how you can mix vintage and antique finds with modern pieces to lighten the mood of a room and add some “wow” to a space. French Country mixed with a little cottage is my personal design style, but I find myself adding a few more modern pieces over the years to update, add interest, and just lighten the mood in a room a bit.
Chairish contacted me and asked how I might use some of their vintage pieces, combined with some modern elements, to add some pizzazz to a space. First of all, I was new to discovering their site, but what an amazing site it is! I loved looking through the different furniture, rugs, lighting, accessories, jewelry, art, etc. and seeing the various items that fellow design lovers buy & sell. You can even look up your city ( Atlanta is mine! ) and see what locals are selling. It’s really fun and a little addicting, I might add 🙂
I chose to feature the Vibrant Pink vintage 1960’s Velvet Slipper chairs because I just found them so luscious and beautiful! I love hot pink and velvet, and typically like using accent colors with other neutrals. I find that it adds life & interest to the space, while keeping things calm, classic and not too busy. I would say this room might be a living room or even a sitting area in a bedroom, and might belong to a young professional in the city who is either single or married, or a suburban couple who has grown children. The room’s purpose could be for entertaining & cocktails, or reading & listening to music. Ideally, the key is relaxation while enjoying the art and beautiful furnishings in the room.
I didn’t add this to my design board, but I would choose a greige tone paint color for the space to let the accents take center stage, while adding a nice, warm neutral to the walls.
I added a few traditional antique elements like the Queen Anne style console table with curvy, cabriole legs with a black lacquered finish, the beautiful Anatolian vintage rug from the 1940’s, and a pair of blue & white porcelain lamps and 3 vases. I love how the white drum shades on the lamps keep things contemporary in the space and give the lamps very clean lines on the gold and glass Albertine side tables, which also contribute to the overall contemporary/vintage mix in the room.
I added a large vintage sunburst mirror because I’m just a huge fan of them in almost any decor and they easily blend with traditional and contemporary/transitional home decor. I also added a crystal chandelier with a black drum shade to give some depth to the space, and because every room needs a touch of black. Antelope pillows were added to the pink velvet slipper chairs for pattern and interest (just like any animal print, they work as a great neutral anywhere!) and a few abstract art pieces to the walls by the Dutch artist,Willem de Kooning and Australian Aboriginal artist, Gloria Petyarre. I kept the accessories in the room simple with a tabletop deer, a pretty candle, and white tulips ( because frankly, can you ever go wrong with tulips of any sort??! ) 😉
To view the whole design board with sources and links, go to my Polyvore board here. This was a really fun project, and I loved finding out about this new site for design enthusiasts such as those who read design blogs ( like yourself! ) It’s a great place to buy or sell vintage and modern home decor. Look under the tab “Featured” to find makers and styles of furniture and home decor, as well as cities where you can find these one-of-a-kind items. I hope you find some great vintage items you love on Chairish!
Til next time, Friends!!
xoxo
