I recently had the pleasure of decorating an office space for a Mom returning from maternity leave. The space needed to function as a nursing space, so I wanted it to be a retreat where she could go throughout the day and relax and have some much needed privacy separate from her workplace cubicle. ( This is an engineering firm where my husband, Mark, is the office manager ) Because I was a nursing Mom many years ago, I understand the importance of this special bond between Mom and baby, and I wanted her to be able to focus on her work, but still be able to feel like she had a place to go for a brief respites during the work day.
Mark sent me pictures of the space from all angles of the room so I had some idea of what I would be working with. I knew curtains were needed for privacy, and I thought a few pillows would be good for comfort. I really liked the soft purple shade of the office chairs, and one wall in the space was already painted in a tan/beige accent which gave interest and warmth to the room.
I set out to one of my favorite home decor stores, Homegoods, to find as much as I could for the Nursing Office Space Retreat. I asked my Instagram friends which pillow for this type of space they thought would be best, and the leopard won hands down! I thought it would be really soft and pretty in the purple office chairs, too, so I grabbed those and found an orchid that would be a nice accent, as well.
I also thought a table lamp would offer some soft, ambient lighting as an alternative to the overhead fluorescent light in this room and give it more of a retreat feel. Another thing I knew I wanted in the room was a piece of art to serve as a focal point with soft pastel colors ( I would’ve gone larger if the budget had allowed ) I was able to decorate this space completely and still stay within budget, which as you all know, is the beauty of discount home decor stores, right? A lot of bang for you buck.
Here are a few “before” pictures of the space:
And the “after” pictures:
I wanted to add something more to the desk, so I bought a tray and a few accessories to add more detail ( a nursing Mom who is pumping at the office needs to see her baby, so I added a picture frame for her 🙂 )
Look at her sweet children! The best accessories & finishing touch of all!
I received the nicest thank you note from the Mom I designed this space for and to me, that’s one of the very best things about being an interior decorator – hearing from my clients & seeing how happy they are with and in their finished spaces. Good design affects our senses and our perceptions, and I’m a firm believer in the fact that a space that is functional, organized, & beautiful truly enhances the quality of an individual’s life!
